SPIRIT QUEST #80
”HOAGLAND'S HEROES"
This quest by Kodiak Kid will take you to
Hoagland Cemetery, Bloomfield Township, LaGrange
County.
HOAGLAND
This Quest takes us to a small pioneer
cemetery northeast of LaGrange, on what used to be State Highway 9,
and is now known as "Old Nine". The cache is a teeny micro, log
only, well camo'ed with the special duct tape and stuck in a likely
spot. BYOP. The real attraction here is the history. The most
recent grave appears to be 1989, and the earliest still marked is
1815.( This marker would make this the oldest cemetery on the
Quest.--Lead Dog) The first recognized white "settlement" in
LaGrange County was near Lima in 1828, so these pioneers were
amongst the first to settle this area. Look for a flag and you'll
find the grave site of one William Bolster, who served in the Civil
War with the 3rd Ohio Cavalry, Company I, and died March 19th,
1864. According to my research, the 3rd Cav was in Georgia on this
date, enroute to action in Atlanta, but was not engaged in any
major battles during March, 1864. There are several other Civil war
soldiers interred here. Please pay your due respect.
While you are visiting this fairly well
preserved burial ground, make note of the poor Durand family, who
could not seem to keep any children alive. The long line of white
stones toward the front of the cemetery, starting with Andrew and
Fannie Durand on the South end, is mostly very young children. Very
sad, but typical of the day. --Kodiak Kid (Photos by Kodiak

The cache container
is very small, waterproof. BYOP. Park with care. If you
find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As
always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash
out.
