INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #83
”BARTON'S SURPRISE"

This quest by Kodiak Kid will take you to the honored resting place of a Hero of the War for Independence, Barton Cemetery in LaGrange County...

Barton

This quest is in northern LaGrange County, near the former settlement of Lima, the first officially listed white settlement in the County. Barton Cemetery is a small, quite neglected little plot probably named because of all the Barton family members there. Obviously, many grave markers are missing, and some are unreadable. The oldest legible marker dates to 1821. The cemetery is no longer active.

The surprise in Barton Cemetery is the grave of a Revolutionary War soldier. The grave has been well marked, both with an original military style stone, and a special marker placed years ago by the Daughters of The American Revolution. The stone reads

"David Cowan,
1762-1851,
Priv. in Rev. War,
Reg. of Co. L. Mory R.I. Troops Com. by Capt. Burlingame".

His year of birth is different on each stone, but his year of death agrees. Your cache challenge is to find a micro, nicely camo'ed with pretty green duct tape, and sign the log with a pencil that you will supply yourself. No trade items will fit. --Kodiak Kid (Photos by Kodiak Kid)

The cache container is very small. BYOP. Park with care. If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
