Geocache Description:

Solar Net. This cache is part of a network of geocaches that establishes a model of the solar system. This cache is one of the main caches of the network, and functions as Earth in the model.

Please do not take any items from any Solar Net geocaches until you understand the process as laid out in the originating cache's description.

Solar Net is a geocache network that loosely models the solar system. It is a medium-size network that has guidelines for hiding and naming the individual network caches to achieve the system model. The originating node for all caches in this network is Solar Net - The Sun - Coppertone's Goldmine. Please visit that link for more information about the network.

Earth the Planet: Earth, our home, is the third planet from the Sun. It has a nearly circular orbit. Our terrestrial planet is the only place known to support life, with 71% of the surface covered with water, which is essential for life as we know it. The planet is volcanic, and the surface crust is composed of tectonic plates, which float independently on the hot mantle below. Earth is surrounded by an atmosphere composed primarily of nitrogen and oxygen which, along with the presence of water, a dynamic volcanic and crust system, and the Sun, results in a dynamic ecosphere where life is encouraged and imminent. It has one natural satellite, the Moon. Earth is the only planet whose name is not derived from mythology. The name Earth has Old English derivation.
Weirdness – Earth’s rotation is slowing at a rate of about 2 milliseconds every 100 years. So 900 million years ago, there were 481 18-hour days in an Earth year.

Earth the Cache: Earth is a small container. It contains one sub-container (satellite), designated the Moon. Earth (with the sub-container) should be hidden no closer than 2 miles and no farther than 3 miles from The Sun cache. The Moon should be taken and hidden no farther than 1 mile from the Earth cache by a geocacher who finds Earth.

Background on the name: You don't know where I got the title of this cache? What, have you been living under a rock? Douglas Adams wrote a series of science fiction/wild fantasy books that included the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: basically a (fictional) encyclopedia of the universe. It described planets, solar systems, wacky aliens... you name it. The complete Guide entry for Earth (Earth was demolished at the beginning of the book to make way for an interstellar bypass) consisted of just two words: Mostly Harmless. Enjoy!

Updated August 2024: The big mean fence was put up so I had to move the cache a little bit closer to the paved path. Cache container is now a clear tube. Please only remove the green cache log, not the white paper. Enjoy!
