An interesting area of an important centre of learning.
Your tour starts at the foot of a grand stairway. This structure and the balustrade rail above is all that remains of the grand Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition Building. This imposing edifice was built in 1886 to house South Australia’s only World’s Fair. The structure was demolished in 1963 to build the appalling Napier Building and associated underground carpark.
To support the exhibition a railway once ran from the central railway station, under King William Road, past the northern wall of Government House, and through the university grounds. The exhibition terminus was reported to be near the foot of the stairs.
Climb the stairs counting them as you go. Head towards the thin controller, which is the actual site of the waypoint. Count the number of pointers. Multiply the number of stairs from one of the flights by the number of pointers. A simple calculation giving you the magic number Q, more than 40, and slightly less than 80.
Now the thin controller has no idea where to go. In fact it is completely wrong. The cache lies in the opposite direction Q metres from the waypoint.
As you wander towards the cache location note two pieces of sculpture. The first is Dual by Greg Johns. Undergraduates have found it the ideal sculpture with which to hone the accuracy of their handball and foot passing skills.
The second sculpture is widely recognised by those in the know as one of the finest in Australia, crafted by a sculptor seen as one of the giants of his field. Moore’s famous sexy piece is valued for insurance at more than $1M. Adelaide is a pretty cool place. We just leave it lying in a quiet park setting.
