Geocache Description:

Opelousas has a population of about 20,000 and has the distinction of being the third oldest city in Louisiana. French traders carried on trading activities with the local "Opelousas" Indians as early as 1690. Opelousas was part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and became the state capital after Baton Rouge fell to Union forces. Today, it is known as the Zydeco Capital of the World since it is the birthplace of the Zydeco greats such as Clifton Chenier, Rockin' Sidney, and Terrance Simien. There are several Zydeco clubs in the area (Slim's Y-Ki-Ki & Richard's Club). Opelouas can also boast being the home of Jim Bowie of Alamo fame. His first marriage is recorded in St. Landry Catholic Church, which was established in the mid-1700's. There are many places of historical interests in area, such as a couple of museums and the towns of Washington and Grand Coteau. Park at N30 31.893 W92 04.436.
