B. O. D. Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Rattlingcrew: This one was stolen previously, another ammo can gone. I replaced it and the city clean up my hide, as in removed the tree with the cache in it. Another player helped me out with a temporary container and it has disappeared too. I am locked up this week, I will let the location go, it is awesome history, a beautiful and historical spot. Thanks for all the nice notes, Glen

Geocache Description:

A spot where you can see the swales left from the freight wagons on the BOD Line.

The B.O.D. or Butterfield Overland Dispatch ran through Kansas in the 1860s. The B.O.D. basically followed the Smoky Hill Trail or the Military Road to Denver. Often escorted by troops from Ft. Leavenworth, Ft. Riley, Ft. Harker, Fort Hays or Ft. Wallace, the Butterfield teams hauled freight and stagecoaches across the plains. The Union Pacific would finish laying rail into Denver, ending the services of the Butterfield. For a few years though, this line was the only way to freight west.

Logan County Courthouse, now Butterfield Museum

The old Logan County Courthouse in Russell Springs Kansas now serves as the Butterfield Museum.

The cache will be found in Chapman Kansas. We are currently trying to secure permission for a cache along the Butterfield at the Buffalo Corrals east of here. The Buffalo Corrals were built along the Military Road and were situated where the road forks and crosses the Kansas River. It is an awesome place in Kansas History, obviously the owners have a few reservations about opening it up to public traffic, but we have been working on them.

Castle Rock

This a marker is just south west of Castle Rock in Gove County. These markers made from limestone fenceposts can be found all across western Kansas and Eastern Colorado.

We found this cache location by driving east on Old US 40 Highway approaching Chapman from the west. There is a large limestone bluff overlooking the Kansas River. We were going to place a cache up there on top of the road right of way. Do not attempt to access this cache from Old 40!

This is commonly known as Indian Hill. On the west slope of the hill are some large swales left by the Butterfield Overland Dispatch. They have an area of this trail chained off as a memorial preservation of the trail. The trail made a large swooping curve here from the north and headed west.

This is in an area that is not available at night and is posted, so please do not come at night.

Old Russell Jail, Now a Museum.

Another Museum along the B.O.D. This is the old Russell County Jail in Russell Kansas.
