Geocache Description:

The cache is a micro (smaller than a deck of cards). It is a log only cache - so you will need to bring a pen or pencil, and is not in plain sight.

You never know what you are going to find when you are out geocaching. On a recent outing we came across the grave of a famous old west character. His name was John Chisum. John Chisum was a cattle barron in the truest sense of the word. Coming from Tennessee to Paris, Texas in 1837, he joined S.K. Fowler in a cattle venture. During the Civil War he supplied beef to the Confederate Troops west of the Mississippi. by 1873 he had relocated his ranch to a place near Roswell, New Mexico. His enormous herds (60,000 to 100,000 head of cattle) pounded trails across Texas and New Mexico. His name has led to some confusion with Jesse Chisholm, who helped establish the historic Texas to Kansas Chisholm Trail. A disastrous packing house deal and his invovlement in the 1876 Lincoln County War ultimately led to his financial ruin. The Lincoln County War also involved another old west gun fighter William Boney, a.k.a. Billy the Kid. The War has been the backdrop for numerous movies, including Chisum, staring John Wayne. John Chisum was also portrayed by James Coburn and Barry Sullivan.
