Geocache Description:

Ammunition can container covered in green and sand colors. About 10 feet above the water in the bank. Very difficult seek.

As you make your way to this cache you will have traveled on both Old Kings Road and the historic Dixie Highway. Prior to 1915 the main route south along the coast from Jacksonville and St. Augustine toward Daytona Beach, Fort Pierce and finally Miami was the dirt trail known as Old Kings Road. Old Kings Road had been in use until 1836 when the 2nd Seminole War got going. At that time area plantations were growing both Indigo and Sugar Cane. You can read about the Seminole warriors burning and killing all the white settlers in the area at nearby parks.

Hardly cutting through the thick wilderness of Florida this road crossed streams and rivers. It was dangerous and few rest stops provided drinkable water. Locals depended on cisterns to hold collected rainwater. Travelers on the other hand had to bring their own water or find it along the way.

This cache is in dedicated to the travelers of the Old Kings Road and the Dixie Highway. The fresh water flowing in this stream provided a stopping point between St Augustine and Daytona for water. It is one of the few places on the east coast of Florida where one can observe a waterfall.

This is a hard area to cover. Maybe 300 feet from the Old Dixie Highway it will seem like much further. No fear of mugglers as you seek the cache unless you count insects, raccoons, Florida bobcats and bears. Warning… be on the lookout for snakes and spiders. Several types of poisonous water snakes and of course rattlesnakes can be found in this area. Container is a 4x4x4 plastic container with forest green tape found in an area carved out by water flowing in the area. The cache is about 10 feet above the level of the water when I placed it.

As always in the Florida woods check yourself over for ticks when you emerge from the woods. Can’t do much about the redbugs so put on bug repellant before entering the woods.
