Rezo Bastoule was a 32-year-old farmer. He and his father worked a small farm in a northern province of Italy. One day in the fall his father said to him; “Rezo, I must go to market today, and I am going to leave you in charge of things. Be sure to feed the goats and don’t allow the cow to get into the corn. I would also like you to replenish the sawdust in the icehouse, and stack up whatever ice is left so that we will be ready when the pond freezes over this winter.”
After his father had gone Rezo began his chores. Rezo was a good worker, very imaginative and resolute. But, his father had left him with no small task. Feeding the goats was easy enough, but how could he keep his eye on the cow while he was working inside the icehouse? Then it occurred to him: why not tie one end of a long rope around the cow’s neck and the other around the icehouse door handle? Since the door opened inward, if the cow moved toward the corn patch the rope would pull taunt and close the door. He would surely be able to hear the door close. Further, because there were no windows or lamps in the icehouse, and only a tiny vent hole in the roof, most of the light would be cut off when the door was closed. So, that would be an added alert, should he for some reason not hear the door slam. Rezo was rhapsodic. Now, he thought, it will be impossible for the cow to get into the corn patch without me knowing it.
The plan worked perfectly while the cow grazed on the side of the house that shielded the corn patch from the cow’s vision. But, by late morning the cow had grazed around to the other side of the house, and upon looking up, saw the corn patch. Immediately she moved toward it, tightening the long rope as she went. Just at the time that she was nearly able to reach the corn, she came to the end of the rope slamming the icehouse door shut with a bang. “Ahh” said Rezo, “the cow is trying to get into the corn patch. I’d better go and attend to her.” But, alas, he couldn’t budge the door. The harder he pulled the harder the cow stretched to reach the corn. Eventually Rezo gave up. Now what am I going to do he thought? This is serious. I can’t open the door and I am getting very cold. It must be close to freezing in here. But he couldn’t see the thermometer, because it was so dark. He decided to have a smoke and think things out. But he soon discovered that he had left the matches in his coat hanging on a tree just outside the icehouse door. What a dilemma; it appeared that his only hope was for his father to come home to set him free. He hoped that would be soon. Then it struck him; he knew exactly how to ease his predicament.
Try to imagine what Rezo did. Don’t be too serious, the more ridiculous and wild the better. Now match your solution with Rezo’s to see how well you did. But, to find out what Rezo did, you must first find the cache. The cache will be in a silver Bison container. Bring a pen to sign the log.
PLEASE KEEP THE LOG DRY AND REPLACE THE BISON CONTAINER EXACTLY AS YOU FOUND IT. THANKS
