Duck Hunt - Spencer Island North Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Right Wing Wacko: The area is still having some work done, but it doesn't really look like it will be a good spot for a cache. Any replacement will definatly be a different cache anyway, so I'll go ahead and archive this one.

Geocache Description:

A nice walk along what remains of the dikes protecting Spencer Island from the waters of the Snohomish River. It's less than a mile from parking to the cache.

The Snohomish River estuary is where the waters of the Snohomish River meet the salt water of Possession Sound, creating an estuary that was formed over the past 10,000 years.

The Spencer Island Wildlife Area is a 412-acre island located in Snohomish County in the Snohomish River delta. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife owns 174 acres at the northern end of the island. Snohomish County purchased the remainder of the island. A memorandum of understanding is being developed between the department and Snohomish County Parks and Recreation Division to co-manage the land.

The island has a dike around the perimeter and drainage ditches in the interior. Evergreen blackberry is growing profusely along the dike. The land is very flat and supports about 50 acres of alder woods, while the rest of the acreage has relatively solid stands of reed canary grass. There are about 23 acres on the northern tip of the island that was only partially diked and is therefore tidally influenced. The outer dike on the southern tip is now breached in three places, creating about 50 additional acres of tidally-influenced wetlands for salmonid rearing. About 150 acres north of the cross levee are flooded. Water levels vary up to three feet deep. This makes it ideal for waterfowl, shorebirds, and a variety of songbirds.

This is a popular spot to view birds and other wildlife. A trail system on the dikes opens up much of the area to foot travel.

The cache is located on the northern end of Spencer island, the most commonly accessible area to hunt -- ducks and geese; with dogs, owned by the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Hunting -- and dogs -- are not permitted on the southern portion, owned by Snohomish County Parks. The Park closes at Dusk.

Yes, there are blackberries near the cache. At the time I hid the cache on Newyears day there was a clear path into the cache hiding spot that did not require going thru any thorns. In fact, I was in a short sleaved shirt and made it out unscratched.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CACHE IS IN AN ACTIVE WATERFOWL HUNTING AREA
