A wonderful respite right between I-40 and Route 66. Exit 47 in the town of Canute, Oklahoma.
The Grotto is a lovely monument to the settlers of Western Oklahoma who maintained their faith during the many struggles they endured. It was built in 1928 with stones from the Red River, the famous river which forms the boundary between Oklahoma and Texas. The bronze crucifixion group to the left of the Grotto is also interesting. There are 2 people buried in the Grotto, one of which is a priest. The statues inside the Grotto are hand painted by area artists, one of which is the granddaughter of the other person buried there. Please stop and read the 4 monoliths directly south of this area. They are right on old Route 66, and hold interesting information on this little town with big Faith on the Mother Road.
