Urban Legends-Cash in the Cache

No actual cachers were harmed in the making of this story. The names and dates have been changed to protect the identity of those involved

On or about April 20, 2001 there begins our story in what now is this park. When Mitchel, a new cacher with 2 finds placed his first cache here.

This is what he started the cache page with:

Hello, I am new to this and I would like to meet all the geocachers in my area. I decided to go ahead and hide a cache and hopefully I will meet you all in time. This should be easy for everyone and it’s not really much more than a grab and go. So come one, come all to my new cache. There is a trail you should see near the coordinates, go in there. I placed a $50.00 dollar bill for the first finder and a $20.00 bill for the second to find and there are goodies inside for all.

One day, then two days, and then finally three days passed and no First to Find, no DNF’s, notes, or anything. Everyone wondered what was going on? How could this be? Could I still be the first to find?

With the temptation of actual “cash” in the cache, team Family Fun began their journey.

They printed the page, gathered their gear (trade items and such), and loaded the kids in the car. When they arrived at the area and saw geo-stickers on several cars in the area. Darn, we are probably too late for the money. They knew they should have tried this earlier, but they didn’t come here just to give up. With the GPSrs now on, they head in the general direction of the coords. The terrain was a little rugged for its rating and there wasn’t really anywhere to park. Sure it was a grab and go, NEWBIES!

They decided to give the new guy a break and start off into the woods. After a few seconds they are only 100 feet away. They spotted the trail mentioned on the print out, but where are all the other cachers. After checking the printout to make sure that they had programmed in the right coords it’s was back on the trail.

The trail entrance was very muddy but Dad pushed on with the stroller. He slipped and slid down an embankment near the creek, but never lost control. With the baby and dad at the bottom of the slick hill and the other two kids up top, mom exclaimed ”I see it!”

Cool that wasn’t so hard, and just half of the team is stuck in the mud down this hill, Dad thought. Mom opened the cache. Getting excited she yelled out loud “I have it, another FTF!” How could it still be here, he thought, we are so lucky.

Then THUD…followed by silence. Not knowing was going on Dad tried to get up the slippery hill. Starting to get worried he called out for his wife and other kids for help. He wasn’t joking, he was really STUCK.

The only sound he heard was rustling in the leaves and then a door closing. Really getting mad that he couldn’t get up the hill he finally forced his way up and saw nothing. No wife, no kids, no cache, or cash for that matter. Just trees and nature.

They must have had to go back to the car for a diaper or food or something. Covered in mud he pulled out his GPSr and started looking for the cache. Just as fast as she found it he did too, he popped open the ammo box and there was the $50.00 bill. She must have gotten distracted by the kids and left it behind, just like a woman, he thought. He took the money and started with the baby back towards the car down the trail.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw a better trail than the one they came in on. The new trail was much easier with the stroller, but there was a part of a house and a door in the path. That must have been what he heard right after his trickster wife wandered off. She’s always carrying things out of the woods trying to CITO. She probably tried to grab the door to put it in the trash.

He went over to the rubble and lifted the door; much to his surprise he saw what could be a room or storm cellar completely in tact. It sounded like someone was laughing down there. Always curious and slightly concerned he quietly unbuckled the baby and crept down the rickety stairs. He saw his wife and kids bound, gagged, and very scared. The other cachers were down there too.

“Grab and go” a voice said. “You grab the cache, but you’ll never go. Mitchel will getcha” the voice laughed. Before he knew it he was knocked out and tied up too.

They would have probably stayed in the cellar for a long time if it had not been for team Dogooders. They were after the cash in the cache also and knew they weren’t far behind the other team by the time on the log entry.

They spotted the stroller left by the door and went to look for the other cachers. When they suspected that something was wrong they piled rocks on the door and called the police. Having the exact coords helped the police arrive fast. When they arrived and opened the door they found all 8 cachers inside the cellar. No one was harmed but everyone was scared. The police arrested Mitchel and took statements from all of the cachers. All evidence of the Mitchel cache has been purged from the geocaching.com system.
