In this area, much of the vegetation is gone from the hills. The
deforestation is the result of logging followed by heavy sulpher
dioxide emissions from a former smelter. Only small shrubs and
grasses have started to take over the bottom reaches of the
mountains.
You may be interested in doing atour of the Mount Lyell Copper
Mine in the town nearby. I have been told it is interesting,
however dogs are not allowed.
The cache is located near an area that allows camping. There is
a gate that can be shut, however the caretaker says it rarely
is.
