Geocache Description:

Team SaguaroAstro's first hide. An Astronimical Themed cache.

This is team SaguaroAstro’s first hide. I am an active amateur Astronomer, so it seemed appropriate that my first cache would be Astronomy themed.

The title of the cache comes from the 88 constellations into which the sky is divided. Some of the names come from antiquity; some were named just a few hundred years ago. Over the years various astronomers compiled star atlases and gave names o the patterns in the sky. After a while it got a bit confusing when no could figure out what part of the sky people, using different references, were talking about. So in 1924 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) got together and formally outlined the 88 constellations as we know them today.

Among the 88 constellations you will find 37 animals, 14 people (all mythological characters), 10 mythical beasts and 27 inanimate objects. For this cache I’ve included a sheet with each constellation and what it represents. To keep the theme going, all you have to do is to leave an object that represents or symbolizes a constellation, Mark it on the sheet and the date you visited. If you take something, mark that as well. For instance maybe you might leave a little bear figurine for Ursa Minor, or a rubber snake for Hydra, Get the idea? Be Creative in your thinking. It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes to get something in the cache from all 88 constellations.

You can also leave anything else related to astronomy. If you don’t have anything astronomical, Please sign the log anyway and let us know you were here!
