The Taneytown Two-Step Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Indy-Md: Team SLACK advised me that the Ikex building has decided to expand and the small grove of trees where the final stage of the cache was hiding has been plowed over. The cache apparently is now buried, it not outright destroyed. [:(]

Geocache Description:

Taneytown Memorial Park! A nice little urban park full of sports fields.

This quick two-step multi-cache was placed in Taneytown the day before CCCooperAgency's b'day (Happy B'day, CCCA!). The purpose of this was to bring cachers to this overlooked little town (so, like, how many of you have driven through here, anyhow, but never stopped?)

The final coordinates of the cache are

N 39º39.V
W077º11.XYZ

The coordinates listed at the top of the cache page will bring you to a small monument near the main parking area. You need to find the date on the monument then perform a few simple calculations in order to find the values for V, X, Y, and Z. Once you have the final numbers, you can either drive another 0.1 or so miles further to another parking area, or just hike it on over (if it has been raining a lot lately, you might consider driving to the far parking area and walking past the far sports field rather than the nearby football field; the lowland area nearer the football field can get quite...marshy at times).

Now, once you have the date from the monument, do the following:

  1. Assign the number of the month to be ‘A’ (where January = 1, March = 3, etc), the day to be ‘B’, and the year to be ‘CDEF’.
  2. CDEF – 1876 = G
  3. 857 – G = V
  4. E – F = X
  5. B + 2 = Y
  6. B – A + 3 = Z
Now that you have the final numbers, plug in and go for the cache!

Note: the final cache is a shade on the small side, so you might want to bring a writing instrument since one didn't quite fit into it.

Historic Info

The earliest known inhabitants in the Taneytown area were native Americans. The Tuscarora Indians hunted deer, otter, wolves, and wildcats in the area’s abundant woodlands. Before the arrival of white settlers, however, most native Americans had already migrated west over South Mountain in the Cumberland Valley. The Treaty of Six Nations, which was signed in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1745, offered white settlers protection from Indian attacks in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia and made the ownership of land by white men legal.

The early European settlers were Germans from Pennsylvania and Germany. Taneytown was founded in 1754 when one of the area’s first land grants took place. Nearly 7,900 acres were granted to Edward Diggs and Raphael Taney under a patent designated as the Resurvey of Brothers Agreement. Lots were laid out and the first deeds registered in 1762. Raphael Taney, whose home was in St. Mary’s County, probably never lived here. He did, however, help design the town’s layout and gave it his name. One popular misconception is that the town was named for Roger Brooke Taney, a U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice. Judge Taney, who shared a common ancester with Raphael Taney, was not born until 1777.

Given the long history of rural settlement, the City and surrounding area is rich in historic landmarks that continue to enhance and affect the character of the area. A portion of the City is designated as an Historic District with the National Register of Historic Places.
