Geocache Description:

Drive up or drop down cache. In "The Pattern" or from "The Tee"

This is an easy cache…but if you hear the roar overhead, and feel your pulse quicken while you try to identify the plane just a few hundred feet above, wondering what lucky people are in it and for what destination they might be headed, this might be the start of a much longer journey.

This cache is located across the freeway from the end of "Two Zero" runway in the traffic pattern of Watsonville Municipal Airport.
There is a rich history of airstrips in the Monterey Bay area. Most have unfortunately been replaced by housing developments. In fact our own Watsonville Airport has recently been under attack by developers who want to use the area for dense housing with little regard for infrastructure like adequate schools, traffic concerns, fire stations, police support and emergency services that are needed to handle the increase of the low income housing proposed. Not to mention the local tax burden needed to support the family services that are the unfortunate side effects of such developments.
Currently Watsonville Muni is very profitable for the community and is utilized by the CHP, CDF, FEMA, and a host of corporate entities who could very well take their business elsewhere.
During the earthquake of '89 Watsonville Municipal Airport played a vital role in bringing in much needed supplies to area residents. More recently Watsonville was a staging point for the air support in fighting the local fires.

We love General Aviation flying. My wife is a pilot and I am currently working on my Private Pilot Certificate. Anyone who has thought about flying should try it if they can. The field hosts many “kids fly free days” or “dime a pound” area flights that are a lot of fun for the whole family and is an inexpensive way to begin to get involved in general aviation.
Cabrillo has a ground school class that can cut down on a large part of the cost of a flying certificate and there are several companies on the Watsonville Field who offer flight training to students in a wide spectrum of learning/teaching styles. (I cannot stress how important it is to find the right instructor for you. Ask around and interview several before choosing and don't be afraid to switch if it isn't working out.) Over the course of your training you will learn about such a wide variety subjects it will amaze you. In the end you will be among the elite group who defy gravity and live in a true 3 dimensional world free from roadblocks, traffic signs, and spare money.
