This is an Offset Cache that requires a compass. It begins at a small park. Watch for one-way streets.
The park is the only remaining public square from Peter Vandorn’s original layout of the city in 1822.
Vicinity: Galloway Methodist was Jackson’s first Christian congregation in 1839. It was quickly joined by others nearby: Episcopal Church 1839 and Roman Catholic 1846. They were needlessly burned by the U.S. Army / Lincoln Administration in 1863, along with homes and businesses. Many of Sherman's soliders were draftees, objected to such war crimes, and wished to be back home anyway. Taxes were raised over 1000 percent to help Carpetbaggers take away the only thing many had left - their bare land. Until this time tents, hats, and blankets with "CSA" woven into the fabric were made in Jackson near the Pearl River and where the railroad crosses S. State St.
The rear wing of Galloway Church facing the park with two large columns, was orginally First Baptist Church (1844). It was one of the few buildings spared burning - being in use as a hospital, first by Confederates. Although standing, it was left in "delapidated condition". Across from Galloway Church is the Galloway House (circa 1889), it was the home of Bishop Charles Galloway.
Farther north is the State Capitol, completed in 1903. It was modeled after the National Capitol (closer than any other state has done). The dome rises 180 feet and there are 750 lights in the rotunda (4750 in all). Built in the Beaux Arts style, the building is topped by an Eagle (8 feet high by 15 feet wide of solid copper covered with Gold Leaf).
The square to the south holds the Governor’s mansion. It was not burned down because it was used as a hospital and U.S. Army officers were sleeping in it after having torched the hotels. The front part is original (faces Capitol St) with the back half of the mansion being added in 1908. Distinguished guests include: L.Q.C. Lamar, Jefferson and Varina Davis, William Jennings Bryan, William Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Gen Douglas McArthur, John F. Kennedy, and Pres. Aleman of Mexico.
Beyond it is the ornate clock tower of the Lamar Life Building (1924) with its gothic gargoyles. It was Jackson’s first skyscraper and is located on Capitol Street. Diagonally from park (SE) is the 13-story Plaza Building (1929) at 120 N. Congress. The Art Deco style features floral motifs and geometric designs. It was originally the Standard Life Building (a new taller one was built as this one filled so fast). The big buildings are Trustmark Bank (1956), Regions Bank (197?), and the Marriott Hotel (opened Sept, 1975 as the Holiday Inn Downtown).
Both Mourning Doves and American Robins have nested over the cache. The Dove was chosen over the Robin because so many cachers had problems finding it and it gives mournful sounds. The Mourning Dove eats seeds. It lays two eggs that take 2 weeks to hatch. Then it's 12-14 days until the chicks fledge (leave the nest).

You will come to the above coordinates on the sidewalk by the street. Look beyond the park for a Castle (you will have to cross a street). In summer you may have to walk west in the street for visibilty. Near the castle, find a metal plaque in the ground. Stand on the plaque and follow a compass bearing of 162 degrees. Don't stop in the crepe myrtles! You are looking for camo match box. Bring pen to sign the logbook.
So who occupies the castle anyway? Ha Ha!
