An easy little wander around the grounds of this parish church. It dates from Saxon times and is over 950 years old. It has a fascinating tale to tell.

Legend has it that a fearsome flying Dragon known as a Knucker (from the Anglo Saxon, Nicor, meaning water dragon) used to terrorise the local neighbourhood from its lair at the Knucker Hole, a bottomless pool of ice cold water, just 200 metres away.
A local farmers son named Jim Pulk, angry at losing livestock to the Dragon, baked a huge poisonous pie and left it on a cart for the Dragon to eat, which it did and subsequently died, unfortunately, after carrying the Dragon's head to a local hostelry to celebrate, Jim was
rather careless, and he himself died by contamination of the same poison.

Jim was given a hero's burial in Lyminster churchyard. The decorative tombstone was later moved inside to protect
it from weathering, so, if you can gain access, it can still be seen in the floor East of the font. It has a cross that overlays a herring-bone pattern, but has no markings to suggest the real identity of the owner.

The Knucker hole remains, beside the footpath to Arundel, now fenced off and owned by a Trout farm so therefore not accessible to the public. Its level never varies, even in the droughts of 1989/90, and sadly, perhaps, there have been no recent sighting of any more Dragons!!

Other variations of this story exist.
