Geocache Description:

The journey to this cache will take you on a sometimes strenuous, hike into the Tri Peaks area of Point Mugu State Park. The cache site offers fabulous 360° views of the area.

I have thought of placing a cache here for quite some time. Last week I accompanied Big Eagle in placing the West Peak cache nearby. Viewing the location up close again has motivated me to get off of my behind and place this cache so that others will be encouraged to experience this fantastic location. The placement of this cache now gives us a cache on each of the “Tri” Peaks. There are now five caches in the immediate Tri Peaks vicinity with several others nearby, on the routes leading to Tri Peaks.

You can access this cache from at least two directions. From the Wendy trailhead in Newbury Park and from the Mishe Mokwa trailhead, on Yerba Buena Road near Circle X Ranch. It will be approximately 9 MRT and about 2,000 feet elevation change, from the Wendy trailhead and 6 MRT and 700 feet elevation change from Mishe Mokwa trailhead. Obviously, the Mishe Mokwa approach is shorter and less strenuous. The stated coordinates are not for the cache itself, but the summit of East Peak. The cache is hidden near a Volkswagen size boulder located 315° (T), 110 feet from the summit. The cache container is a small (.30 Cal.) ammo can. The cache includes the usual geocache fare, but also includes special bonus prize for the FTF.

From the Wendy trailhead, proceed up the trail to the Old Cabin site. From the cabin site, take the unmaintained, but well-defined trail uphill to the southeast. This trail is eroded and very steep in sections. Continue up this trail for approximately 2.7 miles to coordinates N34° 07.540 W118° 56.915. There will be a large bolder on the left side of the trail. Follow the faint use trail east toward the peak approximately .1 miles away. The trail is marked by some previously placed ducs. When you emerge from the brush in the saddle proceed east along the base of the rock bluff on the north side of the peak, until you reach a gentler slope heading to the top. From this point follow your GPS pointer to the summit.

From Mishe Mokwa trailhead, follow the trail approximately 2.5 miles to N34° 07.374’ W118° 56.641’. Here you will find a use trail heading west. Follow this trail west a short distance, until it turns north toward the hill just east of East Peak. As you start uphill, I recommend you head toward the summit of the eastern most hill (this is the hill to the east of East Peak summit), staying to the east (right side) of the drainage. As you near the peak of this hill, turn west and cross the saddle toward East Peak summit, following your GPS pointer to the summit.

Whichever route you take, enjoy your hike and the fabulous views from East Peak.
