Geocache Description:

Tucked away in a wood is a reminder of 3 fallen heroes who died fighting the Germans in a foreign land.

Roadside parking is available at N53 03.525 W001 05.428. The walk from here involves crossing 2 stiles and a railway line (hence terrain rating). Fairey Battle bombers from 300 (Mazovia) Squadron had taken off from RAF Winthorpe (now home to the Newark Air Museum) to raid the port of Boulogne. As the aircraft returned home, a dense fog descended over the Nottinghamshire countryside. Pilot Jan Gebecki, at the controls of Fairey Battle L5499, lost his bearings and crashed into the Foxcovert Plantation, near the village of Calverton. He and his two crewmen, Sergeant Edward Morawa and Sgt Tadeusz Egierski were killed; their bodies were recovered and buried at Wilford Hill Cemetery. In a quiet spot close to the A614, a memorial to the three airman can be found. It was placed there by miners who were preparing the nearby railway line to the former Calverton Colliery. It carries the inscription "Perished for our and your freedom – 13th October 1940 300 Polish Squadron". Many thanks to the Fleetwinders who created this cache
