Entre les années 350 et 370, la forteresse d’Eburodunum - le castrum - a été érigée au bord de la Thièle, près d’un pont que franchissait la route de Besançon (capitale de la province). Ce castrum, protégé par 15 tours, faisait partie d’un ensemble de fortifications constituant les défenses occidentales de l’Empire romain. Il défendait également un port et servait d’entrepôt ravitaillant les garnisons stationnées sur le Rhin.

From the year 350 to 370, the fortress of Eburodunum - the castrum - has been build close to the Thièle river bank, near a bridge of the road to Besançon (capital of the province). This castrum, protected by 15 towers, was part of a system of fortifications constituting the oriental defences of the Roman Empire. It has also protected a harbour and was used as a warehouse to supply the garrisons placed along the Rhine.
