Geocache Description:

Ilkley Moor

This is a micro cache (35mm film tub) situated near (but not in) the Ancient Enclosure of Woofa Bank on the side of Ilkley Moor.

You can still make out the low, rubble walls and the site itself holds various cup-marked rocks. Perhaps the most striking example can be seen in the centre of the enclosure next to a small standing stone.

Cup-marked rocks - Woofa

There is much debate about the significance / meaning of the various carvings but the majority view is that they have a magical or religious significance (Dixon 1992).

A similar enclosure at Green Crag Slack has been tentatively dated at Late Neolithic / Early Bronze Age  (Edwards and Bradley 1999) and the results of pollen analysis from this area show that it was covered in light scrub with hazel, alder, birch and pine covering the plateau.

This meant that the area was suitable for settlements and is thought to have been part of a major trading route across the Pennines.

The cache contains a small log book and a tiny pencil. I don't think there will be enough room for trades.
