Geocache Description:

Bowland contained several “out of bounds” places on the map that I was keen to visit. One of these was “The Arbour”. On 19/9/2004, courtesy of Mr Blair, the Arbour finally came within reach. Unfortunately the direct route is still not possible, so the cache starts from Stang Yule. On my travels, I discovered an interesting "building", so I decided to do a multi to there via the Arbour. The whole of the walk is over land that was previously prohibited. I hope you like it!

WARNING 1: The Arbour is isolated, and you should be kitted-out in proper walking gear including decent walking boots and a change of socks! Don’t attempt this in bad weather, and it’s probably best not to do it alone (you probably won't meet anyone else in the event of a mishap). Although a lot of the walk is on tracks, quite a lot is over rough terrain, with one steep-ish descent. Tell someone where you are going. Allow at least 3 hours. Take a copy of the new OL41 map, which shows the boundaries of the access land. Note that the whole of this walk is on access land.

WARNING 2: The final cache does NOT require any “buildings” to be entered. If you choose to do so, it is at your own risk!

THE CACHE: The cache coordinates refer to the first of three stages. Start from Stang Yule. There is official parking at Delph Quarry, although people park on the grass verges nearer to Stang Yule.

1. Proceed to the first stage. There is a well defined track for most of the way – admire the splendid views of Parlick and Fair Snape. The cache is a film container, which contains the North coordinates of the final cache, It is under a yellow sign, which also has the coordinates stuck to it! Please try to leave things as you find them.

2. Continue north along a vague track towards the second stage. Follow the route of the white stakes, which stop just before the final descent to the Arbour. This is quite steep, and requires a careful stream crossing at the bottom (the map says FB, but didn’t see it). The cache is a film container (above head height, not inside), which contains the West coordinates of the final cache.

3. Proceed west along the track to the bridge. Leave the access land momentarily to cross the bridge and then return to it. Continue to the final cache location. The cache contains just a log book.

Notes:

1. The whole of this walk is contained within an area bounded by the access land limit to the west and south, the path west from the Arbour to the north, and grid line 565 to the east.
2. If you have time, pop to the trig point on Hazelhurst Fell. On a clear day there are superb long-distance views from here.
3. Grouse shooting takes place occasionally on this land during the season from the Glorious Twelfth (August) to 10th December. However, all Sundays are shooting-free. The following website gives details of access restrictions: (visit link)
