Geocache Description:

If you go down to the river today you’re sure of a big surprise….especially if you go along the River Ayr Walk starting from N55° 30.053’ W4° 21.436’.

This is an amazing site of cup-and-ring markings as well as many others. There are in the region of 150 markings, mostly cup-and-rings with some very deep cups. Some are more weathered than others and some overlap. There are various animals, a snake and a small deer. Apparently they were only ‘discovered’ about 20 years but it’s hard to believe they’ve not been seen by many passers by over the years. Some of them are coloured in. I’ve attached some photos but you really have to go and see them in person.

Why do you think they’re here? Why so many markings? Why colour them in?

To get there from the parking place cross the stile and head down across the field to the other stile. Shortly, cross the wooden bridge and immediately turn right up into the woods. Bear right again and follow the path along, it’s not far if you follow the GPSr. It’s very muddy. Reception is not that good under the trees. I hope my coordinates are good as I didn’t get a chance to take many waypoints as I was rumbled by a couple visiting the carvings. I didn’t even write in the log book. The lady asked me if I was taking photos for a magazine!?! Really, do I look like a photo-journalist (in an indignated way)? She mentioned Arran and of course I have prior knowledge of the carvings at King’s Caves. If you find this as fascinating as I did why not pop over to Arran and visit my King’s Caves cache.
