Geocache Description:

If you're not local to the area, you'll probably want to research a map to find your best route to get to this cache. There are mutiple routes to get the Flannagan Dam area coming from many different directions.

This cache is located at the Flannagan Dam Spillway/Floodgaterecreational and boat launch areas. During the flood of 77 the mammoth floodgates on down the road from the cache had waters only 6 feet from cresting the top. This was the closest the Army Corp of Engineers ever came to having to open these floodgates in order to relieve pressure on the dam.

They still open the floodgates on a monthly basis to ensure their proper operation. Who knows, maybe you'll get to see it happen!

Cumberland Mountain Scenic Drive Cache Run

This cache is part of the Cumberland Mountain Scenic Drive Cache Run. The run starts with some caches on the Clintwood side before actually getting on the Cumberland Mountain Scenic Drive. Reverse if coming from the Bartlick/Haysi direction. This is an all day and maybe then some cache adventure so plan ahead and give yourself time if you really want to hit it hard!
