Geocache Description:

A walk around Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s Bateswood Nature Reserve that represents one of the Trust's 'newest’ reserves. Fifteen years ago the site did not exist – it was part of extensive opencast mining operations that took place throughout the area. Since mining finished the site has been restored and continues to develop as a valuable area for wildlife.

For further information on this and other sites across Staffordshire visit Staffordshire Wildlife Trust

The coordinates at the top of the page are for parking.
There is a short walk to Stage One at N53 01.317 W002 18.447

Do NOT leave your car at Stage One, this is a private road

1. At Stage One there is a sign to the right of the gate. Using the usual A = 1, B = 2 etc

Take the line starting with 'HORSE' as line one, find the following:

A = Fourth line, first word, (first letter + last letter) of the same word.
B = Third line, second word, (second letter - third letter) of the same word.
C = Fourth line, second word, (second letter - third letter).
D = First line, first letter.

Follow the road up to an opening on the left and go through the kissing gate.
Stage 2 can be found at N53 01.690 W002 18.717

2. At Stage Two you will find some information about the wildlife within the reserve.

E = Number of named dragonflies
F = Number of named butterflies
G = Number of named birds

3. You will find the cache at N53 01.GBD W002 18.AFG

4. Here’s the twist – on the inside front cover of the log book you will find the coordinates for a micro cache and some of the clues for The Big Picture i.e. A = 1 = Black.

Starting contents are: Finger paints, childs painting apron, 2 packets of coloured pencils (might be useful), chunky chalks, maracas and some sand flags.

Many thanks to Staffordshire Wildlife Trust for permission to place this cache.

Previously there was a decorated walkway into the pond with carved dragonflies, frogs and newts but unfortunately that is no longer there. You can see some of the pictures of it in the gallery for this cache.
