Geocache Description:

Kid-friendly school themed cache.

This is school themed cache - please keep trade items on a school / educational theme. Permission has been granted to place this cache. Cachers can safely ignore the "No Trespassing" signs, so long as you don't mind the old man laughing at you from the top of the hill. :) There is ample parking in the pull-off at the side of the road. This is a little more challenging than the previous hide. If you are going uphill, or over fences, you're off-target. Cache is painted to look like a quart size clay pot.
The house at the top of the hill served as the one-room school for the nearby town of Vigo for about 85 years. As with most one room schools, students of all ages were in the same room. Older students often tutoring the younger students. The school never had running water, it was carried up from a spring in Vigo by the students daily. (This artesian well was available above ground until the late 1980s, when it was made inaccessible.)

The school was built in 1864 on one of three tracts of land that were acquired during that year and the following. Later, in 1910, an additional room was added. It served as the local primary and secondary school until 1948. The school, and surrounding property were then sold and the owners made a number of renovations, adding indoor plumbing and electricity. The current owner is now restoring this house, including the "one room" to it's original state complete with desks, slate chalkboards, and bell-tower.

A number of people who attended this school, are still alive, and reside in the area.

The town of Vigo (like "I go") lies south-east of the cache. Lickskillet can be found directly to the west. Both towns were at one time railroad stops.

You may notice that a few trees (notably the large one at the pull-off, are marked with light blue paint. This road is part of the discovery trail system. One of my other caches, "Hang Em High On Hang Glide Hill" is also on this trail system.
