As the darkness swirls around you, the Native American
Chieftain says you are needed. Something in the darkness around you
is howling! You turn to ask the chieftain what he needs you for. In
the dim light you see gleaming red eyes! Then a shape moves by. It
has bat wings and a forked tail! Is that the Machtando Japeechan?
You turn around again and you are in your house. The moon outside
is full. Suddenly a face appears at the window. It’s small, pointy
and covered with hair. The thing is laughing! You scream out! No
sound comes from your mouth. You turn to run but your feet can’t
move! You struggle and scream. You can feel the force of something
restraining you! And all the time that thing is in the window……
laughing!!!!!!!
You awake suddenly next to your bed. You had that same
nightmare again. You’re all tangled up in your sheets and you have
obviously been screaming. Your throat is sore and your sweating. As
you walk to the kitchen to get a drink, you try to remember what
the Indian chief in your dreams told you. He has haunted your
dreams since you brought home your grandfather’s old Lenape Indian
tale. Your grandfather told you an old Indian Chief gave it to him.
It was painted on a piece of animal hide. What is the chieftain in your
dreams trying to tell you? What was it he said?
“You must know the way to stop him! Go to the
totem!”
What totem is he talking about? What could this have to
do with the poem?
You started translating the old Indian tale. Maybe this
place will help you find some answers. Unable to sleep, you begin
searching Native American totems on the web. You find the one you
were looking for. That thing in your dreams is on top! It’s right
here in New Jersey! You pack up a pen and some paper, grab your
translation of the old poem and throw them in an old backpack.
Tomorrow you will go to the and, hopefully, find the answers you
seek. Is that the Machtando Japeechan?
