"Double Split Trees" or "Best Cache by a Dam Site" Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Duane L: After a run of thirteen years, I have decided to deactivate this cache. It has always required an excessive amount of maintenance due to muggles, wind, rain, squirrels and raccoons accidentally kicking clue containers out the forks of two trees, etc. In the past few years, there has almost been more maintenance visits, official and unofficial, than cache hunters, so this cache is no more as of 3/31/2018, when I removed all clue containers and the cache container itself. For all of you who enjoyed hunting for this cache, I am happy you had fun. My favorite story about "Double Split Trees" was the time two VERY experienced geocachers couldn't find it, and because of their multitudinous finds, assumed there were clue containers missing, and reported that the cache needed maintenance. The problem was that I had checked the clue containers five days prior and two days subsequent to their hunt, and everything was right where it was supposed to be both times. As I was checking everything two days after their "Needs Maintenance" post, I came across a young family just coming from finding it...on their first day of geocaching, ever! Too funny...Cache On, Duane L

Geocache Description:

The coordinates listed above are for a small parking area at the west end of Salt Fork Dam that is restricted to official and emergency vehicles only. Cachers and fishermen must now park 200 yards down the hill from the coordinates in an obviously new, dirt parking area. Parking is permitted between the locked gate and the paved road as long as access to the gate is kept open for official vehicles. This is a puzzle cache consisting of four clues. Clue #1 is "After parking 200 yds. down the hill from the coordinates listed above, climb the slope of the dam to the top, then follow the yellow brick road, in this case the green grass road, straight ahead till you can go no further. Look to your left (northerly) for a nearby tall, split trunk tree. At that double tree you will find Clue #2 inside the remains of an old, expended explosive device." Clue #2 leads to Clue #3, and #3 leads to #4, where you will find the coordinates for the cache. The only coordinates given are for the parking area (listed above) and the cache. Clues #1, #2, and #3 are riddle type clues, with #3 requiring you to follow a compass heading. The cache is in an ammo box. There are plastic bags in the ammo box so that after you "cache in", you can "trash out" on the way back to your car. Round trip distance is a little less than a mile. Happy hunting!
