Take the trail named after the famous Miami Indian, Chief Little Turtle. This trail is the first and the longest trail (2 mile loop) at Shawnee Lookout. One part of the trail goes through a ravine, with moderate elevation change. The east side of the loop will give you great views of the Ohio River. As you approach the cache you will see ancient burial mounds. Please do not climb these mounds. Please stay on the trail until the last few feet of nearing the cache. You will be looking for a large-mouth ½ gallon plastic container.
Parking Choices:
N39 07.500 W84 47.448 Trailhead – For the maximum hiking distance.
N39 07.530 W84 47.358 Alternate – Pick up the trail to the right of the back fence. It’s about 2,000 feet shorter.
Hiking Choices:
On the trail you will come to a “4-way” intersection. You must decide which way to go.
Going SE is the easiest walk, but it is also the longest (at .65 mile to the cache).
Going NE is the more challenging “ravine” walk, but it is also the shortest (at .46 mile to the cache).
Note: If doing the loop, I suggest heading SE. Much easier walk this way. GPHC Permit No. 051975-11.
