The coordinates at the top of the page are not for the final cache. They are to the final resting place of Captain Charles V. Gridley. Captain Gridley was the commander of the USFS OLYMPIA, the flagship of Commodore Dewey’s Asiatic Squadron, at the Battle of Manila Bay. Dewey, in command of the overall squadron, was also aboard OLYMPIA. At the beginning of the battle, Dewey uttered the sentence that became one of the most famous statements in American naval history and which immortalized the OLYMPIA’s ailing captain: “You may fire when you are ready, Gridley.”
In order to arrive at the coordinates for the cache, you will need to obtain some information from the headstones in the Gridley Circle area of this cemetery to substitute for the letters in the following coordinates.
N42 08 AB0 W080 02 CD4
From John P. Vincent's headstone, subtract the last digit of the date of his death FROM the last two digits of the date of his birth. Substitute this number for letter A.
There are four cannons ringing Gridley Circle. They each have the same year inscribed on the carriage. Substitute the third digit of the year (18_7) for letter B.
Substitute the last two digits of the year Charles Gridley died for letters C and D.
There is also a magnificent view of the lake and one of the lighthouses on Presque Isle close to Gridley Circle. Don't let children venture too close to the cliff. The cache is not hidden anywhere near the cliff.
