Geocache Description:

Welcome to Norval! Most walking will be done on sidewalks. You will require a flashlight for night caching. Be careful of traffic, moving water and muggles.

In Toronto Township, on the 28th October, 1818, the Chiefs of the Otter and Eagle tribes, "PrincipalMen of the Mississauga Nation" put their totems on "Treaty 19"; an agreement to buy a large tract of land in the Home District. Lieutenant Governor Maitland named two of the townships, Chinguacousy and Esquesing, names used by the Mississauga Indians; Norval is in both townships.

Norval Flour Mills

An energetic walk in the Village of Norval with a history lesson and a bit of math thrown in for fun. This cache consists of three stages, two micros and a final. Most of the walking will be on local sidewalks with some trails. When you reach the "Device" I suggest you spend some time and read up about this great item and then have a walk around the park.

Norval's Human Interfaced Solar Distance Relationship Measurement Device

Parking: The coordinates listed above are for the parking lot located on Nobel Street alongside the Credit River.

Stage 1: Look over your shoulder here and you will find a large stone marker with a plaque attached. Be careful and read the whole plaque then make a note of the sum of all seven years mentioned on the it.

Micro 1: To find this micro take the above mentioned stage 1 sum and divide by 1000 then add it to the following meaningless coordinates; 43°25.860N and 079°38.365W. This is a film canister filled with slips of paper for latitude. Take one of these slips to be used later.

Stage 2: There are two churches on Guelph Street located at 43°38.791N by 079°51.708W and 43°38.771N by 079°51.781W. You can find them easily and may not need cross the street. Make a note of the sum of the AD years that both of these churches were built. One church has a cornerstone the other is written backwards in stained glass. Both dates are above the main entrances. You will need a flashlight if night caching.

Micro 2: To find this micro take the above mentioned stage 2 sum and divide by 1000 then subtract it from the following meaningless coordinates; 43°42.589N and 079°55.671W. This is a film canister filled with slips of paper for longitude. Take one of these slips to be used later.

Stage 3: Enter the coordinates you gathered from the two micro caches and make your way to this stage. Congratulations you have made it to the "Device". During certain conditions you may need to brush aside some snow to continue. On the device are a set of coordinates they are located on the dial plane just below the analemma, if you have time and the weather cooperates you can help set this device into operational mode. Take the coordinates that are chiseled into the rock and subtract the coordinates that you gathered from micros 1 and 2(North from North and West from West)assume zeros after decimal points.

Final: Just about there. Take the two Lat and Lon numbers you calculated at stage three and multiply them each by five then add them to the following meaningless coordinates; 43°37.709 and 079°50.711. The resulting coordinates will direct you to the cache hidden down by the river.

Cache: The cache is a small Tupperware type container and contains explanation sheet, log, pencil and all of the usual trading items. Some of the trading items on day one included: a travelling first aid kit, flag pin, bovine trading cards, fuzzy bat, phone cord rewinder, brass shells, minature stained glass, travel bug, geocoin and a special envelope for the first finder. Have fun in Norval and be careful of traffic and muggles. Good Luck.

Hollywood Hotel and Mill

The village had blacksmith and harness shops, carriage works, woolen and flax mills, broom factory, ashery, bakery, brass foundry, general stores, Orange Lodge, Mechanic's Institute, and several hotels; Norval was a main stagecoach stop from Toronto to Guelph. Norval's Post Office was established in 1836.
