I placed this cache to commemorate a very special moment in my life. The event broadened my horizons and its lessons have stuck with me for all these years ;0)
Way back in February 1996 I was visiting Michigan for the very first time. I had come to visit my girlfriend (who became my wife later that year) and her family for the first time.
I had flown in the night before and had been bundled from the airport into a car and into my motel room without even a hint of the current state of the weather.
The next day I woke and got ready to meet the world. I pulled back the curtains the sun was up and it was a bright blue day. My body clock still stuck on British time told me it must be well past noon but the motel clock told me it was only just breakfast time.
What to do? I could sit in my room and watch TV or go out and explore my surroundings. I set on the edge of the bed and flicked through the channels and found nothing worth watching.
I decided I needed to go out and find out what was happening in the world or at least find out the local NEWS and gossip. I put on my coat and checked that I had my wallet, and scooped up some loose change with my room key and put them in my pocket..
I stepped out of my room and closed the door.
I remember smiling, as it was funny seeing my breath.
I first looked left and then right and I saw what I needed, so off I went.
Although I lived in what is thought by many to be as a colder climate...
It’s truly amazing how wrong my perception of cold was.
Fact: Scotland (where I used to live) is at higher Latitude than Michigan, but the ocean currents from Mexico keep the British Isles warmer in winter and cooler in summer than the extremes of Michigan.
I hadn’t gone far, when I had gotten to where I was going. If I had turned around I'm sure I could have seen my room, but at that exact moment when I was about to find out what was happening in the world I learned three important things instead.
1) I learned the true meaning of the words “wind chill”.
2) I learned that gloves aren't just for wimps.
3) I learned why it is important to make sure you dry your hair before setting out into the world.
When I got back to my room you could hear the ice crack in my beard as my teeth chattered. ;0)
To find this cache all you need to do is go to the coordinates then follow in my footsteps.
The cache is very small and unusual; it only has room for the logbook and cache notice so bring your own pen. I hope you have fun and find this hunt challenging.
