Geocache Description:

Lundy Island lies off the coast of North Devon, where the Atlantic ocean meets the Bristol Channel. With nothing between it and America, this granite outcrop three and a half miles long and half a mile wide makes for a wonderful day trip experience.

Lundy (c) www.lundyisland.co.ukI'M SORRY TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE FERRY HAS NOW BEEN COMPLETELY BOOKED. TRY THE BOOKING OFFICE FROM TIME TO TIME IF YOU WISH, JUST IN CASE THEY HAVE ANY CANCELLATIONS.

At long last, the much discussed and slightly hyped Lundy Geocaching Event has been approved. The Event location is Lundy Island, located where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Bristol Channel, 11 miles from Hartland Point in North Devon, and an approximate two hour ferry journey from Bideford aboard the island's own ferry, the MS Oldenburg.

The granite outcrop rises 122 metres out of the Atlantic, a natural fortress with towering cliffs and steep grassy slopes. There are no cars on the island, so it feels far removed from the modern world. Lundy is home to a rich diversity of animal, plant and bird life. The small village has an inn and Victorian church and nearby the 13th-century Marisco Castle keeps guard.

Should you decide to walk right around the island in an attempt to find all the caches on the island during the day, your route will take you along some splendid coastline with unique flora and fauna to divert your attention along the way.

There will be time at the end of the day to have a drink at the only inn on the island, the Marisco Tavern. Several hours aboard the ferry means there will be many chances to talk to other cachers about their experiences, and make some new friends. There may also be an opportunity to continue the event at one of the public houses in Bideford once back on the mainland in the evening.

To read more about Lundy and what it has to offer for visitors, youare advised you to go to this web page for more details: http://www.lundyisland.co.uk.

The event date has been chosen to maximise the amount of time available on the island (ferry times change with the tide). Assuming the crossing goes to schedule, arrival on the island will be 11am, and departure will be at 5:30pm. You are responsible for arranging your own tickets for the ferry. You should make yourself aware of the time you need to turn up at Bideford in the morning. It is up to you to check this time please. Family tickets, and discounts for National Trust members, senior citizens, students and groups are available. Food and drink is available onboard the ferry.

To book your tickets on the MS Oldenburg passenger ferry, you will need to go to this web page for details: Lundy Island Booking Information. You can buy them online, or by post, or by telephone.

Please only post a "Will Attend" note on this cache page when you have actually purchased your tickets. It is advisable to buy them well in advance. The ferry can carry 267 people, but tickets often sell out. So, don't delay if you want to be sure to join in on this special event! As at 10 March 2005 there are no more seats available for the ferry.

Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the island, which is a big shame, because my dog Ozzy would have loved it!

See you at Bideford for the morning crossing!
