INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST #114
”SAMUEL WOODWORTH, 2nd N.Y.
Volunteers"
The Shadow has selected North Otsego
Cemetery, Ostego Township, Steuben County, for this caching
experience. Even tho you cannot see him, Listen carefully to what
the fabulous SHADOW has to say about this place:
Here is North Otsgeo
(Topozone can't decide on the proper spelling) Cemetry, a small,
isolated, RARELY used cemetery. The newest marker I found at first
was 1935. Then I found ONE in 2004. That was a bit of a
surprise.
There are many older
markers here, many of which are
illegible.
This site has the
honor to be the final resting place for one of the two Veterans of
the Revolutionary War buried in Steuben County, Samuel Woodworth.
Alongside his grave is his that of his son Barzilliel Woodworth, a
veteran of the 1812 War. These two are in the southeast corner of
the cemetery. Cachers, please pay your respects. We really owe
these guys. There are several other veterans resting here as well.
No one can say that one gave more of himself than another, just by
what war they participated in. That would also go for their
military rank as well. This cemetery gives us the opportunity to
honor those from our earlier wars.
Off road parking for one vehicle is
available, at no cost. There is no name sign here.--THE
SHADOW
Thanks, Cranston! These two graves were
redicated with new markers in 2002 in a ceremony conducted by the
Sons of the American Revolution, and the American Legion, with
color guards in period uniforms and a musket salute. Both Woodwards
were born in Connecticut, er kanedikat, well you know that Colony
south of Massachusettes Bay, er massatoosits, well in New
England.
The cache container was a
camo'd match holder; now it's a small loc-n-loc. BYOP. Park with
care. If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the
ground. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
