Carpenter’s Woods is an oasis of green space situated between Sedgwick St and Mt. Pleasant Ave. It stretches from Wissahickon Ave to Greene St. The woods were named for Carpenter’s Run that meanders thru the woods and eventually empties into the Wissahickon Creek. Carpenter's Woods is considered one of the birding hot spots of the Delaware Valley. There are warblers, woodpeckers, vireos, and many other species. Bring your binoculars. Many knowledgable and friendly birders frequent this area and will help you with identification. You will also encounter dog walkers and joggers. Go to the coordinates and locate the two memorial benches. One of the plaques was for Jerry Thomas, but it is missing. He died in 1998.
Take the last 2 digits of the year "Jerry" Thomas died, subtract 20; and then add that number to the latitude.
Take the last 2 digits of the year Mike Stafford was born, add 15; and then subtract that number from the longitude.
These are the coordinates of the cache. The calculations are a bit convoluted. Write down all the dates so you can double check your math if need be. You can take a trail most of the way. The GPS signals are very poor in this area, especially with tree cover. The cache has been moved slightly so I have changed the math instructions. Please recover the cache.
A trailhead is located at the Wayne Ave. bus loop on Sedgwick Street.Parking is available on Wayne Ave. and on Sedgwick St. between Henley St. and Wayne Ave. DO NOT park in the indentation which serves as the bus loop. Buses need this area to turn.
See above for Jerry Thomas's date. The plaque is missing.
