Churches and Sandstone Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kelsborrow Wayfinders: We went to check the cache today and sure enough it has been muggled. However rather than replace it we have decided to archive it. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly it is a very boggy (and slightly smelly area) so it was not the best of locations and there was nowhere covenient nearby. Secondly we originally intended for people to walk down from the church but many people reported that the gates were closed and although there is a convenient small road close to the church most people were approaching from the other direction which is a small lane leading to a dead end. Although this is closer it meant pulling in to the side of the lane and we didn't feel that this was appropriate. Finally two more of our caches have been vandalised over the weekend which has dampened our enthusiasm.

Geocache Description:

The sixth in a series of caches located on or close to the Sandstone Trail.

The Sandstone Trail is a long distance trail running 32 miles from Frodsham to Whitchurch. This cache location is close to Old Chad Chapel which dates from 1689 when it was a chapel of ease for Malpas church. After restoration, in 1841, the chapel was superseded by the parish church of St Chad’s where you can park your car (see below). Unusually there is no road access to the old chapel and the only way you can get to it is across the fields. The chapel is still used on several occasions during the summer, including Rogation Sunday, Ascension Day and Rushbearing Day. Supposedly there are white owls here which are said to fly to the village when any inhabitant is about to die!

The best place to park is at St Chad’s church on the A41 at N53 00.789 W002 42.769. The cache is a short walk from here but is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. It is also possible to walk from Willey Moor Lock pub (in the Good Beer Guide) but look out for the opening and closing times as they shut the gate to the car park. The area around the cache could become very boggy so be warned!

The cache is a small tupperware container in a camouflage bag. Please make sure that the cache is properly concealed when you replace it.
