Geocache Description:

Cows around Mud lake, early 1900s

Laguna Puerca is also known as Pine lake and was once known as Mud Lake. It is one of three remaining freshwater lakes in San Francisco, the others being Lake Merced and Mountain Lake. When the Sunset neighborhoods were first developed, Mud Lake was a popular "swimming hole" with the younger residents. Nowadays, groundwater pumping and rainwater diversion have reduced it's depth from 20 feet to as little as 7 feet, and invasive plants are filling the water.

It's a nice stroll around the lake though - park at Crestlake and Wawona to take a trail down, or enter the park at Crestlake and Vale for the main parking lot.
