Geocache Description:

Coastal cache easy to find but with moderate length walk to get there along footpaths and seashore.

This cache contains a supply of Scottish Shillings issued during the 1940s. Please take only one per person as top up supplies are limited. There are also a few other small items of interest.

The best access point is from Eathie car park at NH76926 BNG63530. Follow path down to the shore at Eathie fishing station (now abandoned), and then walk along the shore past the restored fishing bothy at NH77770 BNG63486 (contains interesting local information) until you reach the cache. Alternatively park at Hillockhead car park at NH74256 BNG60454 and follow cliff path down to the shore and then approach the cache along the shore from the opposite direction. It is also possible to park at Rosemarkie at NH73793 BNG57676 and then walk all the way to the cache along the shore, but please note that for about two hours either side of high tide there is an impassible steep section at NH74580 BNG59502 so CARE PLEASE if you approach from Rosemarkie. If you have a small boat or canoe you can approach the site by sea, but unless conditions are calm it may be difficult to land and you may have to go along to Eathie fishing station where there is a better landing site.

The cache itself is hidden in a pile of boulders not far above the high tide line that must have been cleared many year ago when this flat bit of seashore was used for grazing or cultivation. Easy to find once you get there.

There are fossil beds immediately offshore between Eathie fishing station and the cache site, so keep your eyes open for washed up fossils to collect. You are also likely to see dolphins offshore and, if you are quiet, otters that frequent this section of coast. Depending on the time of year you will also see a variety of seabirds. The cache site itself is a pleasant flat grassy area beside a small beach. Great place for a picnic or overnight camp (but no fresh water). Have fun.
