William Hesketh Lever had a vision of people living and working in harmony with nature and industry in 19th century Britain. His belief that the “sharing of prosperity makes life easier, better, brighter, and higher for all” became the foundation of Port Sunlight.
The village, which was founded on four principles - Industry, Art, Education, and Charity - was a rare opportunity for the working classes to enjoy a better way of life; the product of Lever’s intense idealism.
The co-ordinates given above are for a convenient place to park outside the Lady Lever Art Gallery. Dedicated to W.H. Lever’s beloved wife, it is one of the most opulent and beautiful galleries in the country housing masterpieces by Millais, Ford Madox Brown, and Rossetti, as well as landscapes by such luminaries as Constable and Turner. Souvenir gifts and postcards can be bought in the gallery shop, and you will also find café and toilet facilities here.
