Red Tail Lake II Traditional Cache
carleenp: I have decided not to replace this. It is a great area for a cache though, so I hope someone puts one out there!

This cache is located at Red Tail Wildlife Management area west of Valparaiso Nebraska. You do not need a park pass for the area. Please note that the exercising, training or running of dogs is not allowed in the area from May 1 to July 31. There are no facilities available in the area, so bring your own water.
This cache is a replacement of sorts for the Red Tail cache that went missing last year. However it is in an entirely different location within the wildlife management area.
Red Tail lake is a "hike in" lake from the parking area. In spring and summer the area often has a nice variety of wildflowers. The hike to the cache is just under 1 mile.
The walk to the cache follows a mowed and dirt trail to the lake. After that, there may or may not be a mowed trail to the cache area. During summer, the grass will be long in the area. In times of wet weather, there might be a shallow water crossing required. This area has been known to have ticks. I recommend wearing long pants and the use of deet and or permethrin treated clothing. This would be a fun cache to snow shoe to in winter.
The cache is an ammo can with a geocaching sticker. it is located near the edge of the area, so you will see a fence. Do not cross the fence. The cache is inside the management area.
Red Tail lake has a good reputation for supporting large bluegill and bass. It has often been a favorite fishing area of mine. Last year (2004), the lake did experience some problems with toxic algea and I noticed that water clarity was not ideal when I placed the cache. Hopefully it will clear up and be a good fishery again this year. By early summer the lake will get quite weedy. However fishing from the shore is still feasible. I often fish from the dam, casting into the area just in front of the weeds. It is also a great place to use a float tube, although you will have to carry it in!
Please note that duck season has started and that others might be hunting pheseant or rabbit there. Although I don't think it is a favorite spot for hunting and is more of a fishing spot, please wear orange or other bright colors during hunting season. The walk to the cache keeps you in the open, so any worries are slim, but be prepared just in case.
