Geocache Description:

Located near the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge where the Kilauea Stream meets the ocean at Kahili Beach on Kilauea Bay. There are two ways to approach this beach.

First approach: Cache is located at the end of a dirt road near a beautiful lagoon and a beach where many locals surf. To get there, drive to the town of Kilauea. Continue 0.7 miles through town to an unnamed small paved road off Kilauea Road. Unless you have a 4 X 4 truck do not attempt to drive down the dirt road that continues off the paved road. Road is now closed The walk to the cache is about 1 mile one way. Along the road you will be walking past bannana orchards. Second approach: From Lihue take Highway 56, turn makai (towards the ocean) on Wailapa Road, which is between mile post 21 and 22. Drive about half a mile; turn left to Kahili Beach on the dirt and gravel road. When this dead-ends there is room for several cars to park. Walk towards the water until you reach the beach. Then walk left where you will need to cross the Kilauea Stream if the hide is high. The stream is usually not too deep. During low tide you will not need to cross the stream. Once you cross the stream (if needed) turn left to find the cache location. If you feel like exploring the area further, the Pools of Mokolea are just a short walk on the rocks past the parking lot.
