Geocache Description:

The area where the cache is located is a small town Reserve off Stead Street. It is a very easy location adjacent to the estuary with carparks and has park bench seating.

It is a short walk from the car parks. The location has a building that is used by the Jellicoe Sea scouts and the rest of the area has been developed by the local City Council for use by the public.

Information boards provide a commentary on the local history and reproduced photographs give a very good idea of what the area used to be like.

A restored steam powered engine, believed to be one of the first in New Zealand is also located at this site.

For those that are a little more adventurous, a new hard packed gravel track has been formed around the edge of the estuary, unfortunately the area is in the early stages of being restored and used to be the Invercargill Refuse site. A reasonable amount of rubbish still has to be cleaned up but if you are interested in birds then this walk presents the opportunity to see a variety of New Zealand seabirds, various duck species, Black swans and if you are lucky some of the migratory species that stop by occassionally.

The cache is a small red cookie bucket with a yellow lid, it contains a couple of items.
