This regular cache is hidden along the Schodack Island State
Park trail system. The cache container is a 30 cal ammo can. The
difficulty rating is due to the length. Total round trip distance
is about 2 miles, so if you bring the kids make sure they are up
for a hike. The hiking is virtually flat, on well-packed, marked,
dirt trails that can get muddy after good rains.
The park entrance on Rt.9J is at: N.42-31.085, W.073-45.590.
Follow the mostly gravel road south to the ranger station where you
will be asked to pay a $6 entry fee(during the operating season)for
the car load for a day pass. This park is primarily a Boat Launch
& Day Use Facility.
The season schedule is: April 1st- Labor Day/ 6am-7pm Labor Day-
Columbus Day/ 6am-5pm
You can get more info on the park here: Schodack
Island State Park
Enjoy the wildlife and abundant birds, and keep an eye open for
the Bald eagles that are frequently spotted here.
It has a comfort station, picnic tables, and kiosk listing some
of the local history that dates back to the 1600's, Henry Hudson,
and the native Mohican Indians.
While hunting for this cache you may want to include our two
others; "Mohicans of Schodack Island" and "Mohicans of Schodack
Island, Too"
NOTE: If you plan to hunt all 3 in our series, it would
be wise to start by finding the 1st part of "Mohicans of Schodack
Island, Too", then head for "Mohicans of Schodack Island", then
continue "Mohicans of Schodack Island, Too", grabbing "Mohicans of
Schodack Island-3" along the way. This will allow you to make a
distance saving journey to grab all 3 caches.
Also note that summer is upon us and the deer flies and
mosquitos are out in force! Be prepared with insect repellant, and
watch for poison ivy in spots.
