The cache is at the only point where the South Downs Way crosses the Meridian i.e. the imaginary line between the Eastern and Western hemispheres. It is a bit of a novelty to see the coordinate flip from E to W and back as you pace back and forth to find the cache.
There are several ways to approach the cache site, but probably the nearest car parking is on Mill Lane, Rodmell, just off the road from Kingston to Newhaven (N 50° 50.030 E 000° 00.700). However, if you use this as your starting point, please park considerately so as not to inconvenience the residents.
The cache is a small clear plastic box around 10 x 8 x 4 cm and contains the log book, a pencil and a few small items. The cache is located about 5 metres west of the actual meridian and you do not need to leave the path to find it. If you have any trouble with stinging nettles, you are looking in the wrong place!
There are good views in both directions, including Seaford Head and Newhaven to the South East and wide vistas of East Sussex to the North, including Lewes, Mount Caburn & Firle Beacon.
Whilst in the area, it may be worth considering a visit to Monk’s House which is about a quarter of a mile down the lane from the Rodmell crossroads in a North Easterly direction. There is an NT car park just past the house – but no toilets!
This is a small weather-boarded house owned by the National Trust which was the home and country retreat of Leonard and Virginia Woolf until Leonard’s death in 1969. The house reflects the life and times of the somewhat controversial literary circle in which they moved.
However, the house and gardens are only open between 2 and 5:30 on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from April to October. There is a relatively modest charge for non-NT members.
