Hike or ride to the highest point in McDonald Forest for a small cache and big view.
McCullock Peak is the highest point in McDonald Forest owned by OSU and is about 5 miles on gravel roads from the gate at the Oak Creek Lab at the end of Oak Creek Road. There are several ways to get to the top, but my recommendation is to start at the gate on the 600 road, take a left at the 680, then left on 700 then left at 790 which ends at the top of the peak (elevation 2155'). This is about a 5 mile walk, almost all up somtimes a steep hill. By mountain bike it is about an hour up (if you are like me) and 12 mins down (wahoo). Cache is a small clear white tube that I picked up at one of the Coffee Cache events. Bring something to write with and small trade items.
Cache is in honor of CFM (since she is always trying to kill me on her caches, I thought I would return the favor) and my youngest brother who let me buy his old mountain bike so I can make it to CFM's caches (and he could buy a new one). This is a small container because I wasn't going to haul an ammo box all the way up there, but feel free to do so if you would like.
For a good map, pick up the "Marys Peak - McDonald Forest Recreation Guide" by Sky Island Graphics at any bike, hike or sporting goods store in the local Corvallis area.
McDonald Forest is one of the treasures of living in the Corvallis area. This forest is maintained by Oregon State University and caches placed here need to be approved by them (see "When Good Caches Go Bad" for details). So be good cachers and stay on the approved roads & trails.
Finally, of course there is a hint, if you are going to go all that way, I don't want you to leave empty handed.
