Geocache Description:

The general theme for this gentle series of loosely connected caches is the sea, or rather the lack of it. There are many things around us that suggest that they should be in a more brine-laden setting than they actually are.

The Royal Naval Submarine School (RNSMS) was formally based at HMS Dolphin, Fort Blockhouse, Gosport near Portsmouth. HMS Dolphin closed as a submarine base on 30th September 1998, although the last RN submarine, HMS Ursula left early 1994.

The pub sign on this friendly village inn depicts the marine mammal rather than a connection to the Royal Navy. These aquatic creatures are the most specialized of all mammals, with adaptations that allow them to spend their entire lives in water. Fossils have been found that date back 11 million years. Legends of dolphins rescuing men lost at sea have existed throughout the ages. Although some may have been stretched out of proportion or completely manufactured, dolphins have been known to be friendly to humans in their environment.

Parking for our walk around Middleton Cheney can be found at N 52º 04.348 W 001º 16.422 but please be aware that the car park next door is attached to the Red Lion Pub.

At the coordinates above examine the number of fins on a dolphin, excluding the tail on one side of the sign. (B) In the middle of the road is a memorial and some dedication plaques. One of them is for TOM SPENCER SMITH. How many o's are there in his profession? (A)

Walk from here to the local social club at N52º 04.232 W001º 16.409 and examine the signage at the gate that told me how to set the attributes for this cache. The number of letters in the top two lines of the sign that tells me not to do something is ( C).

Your choice is now to return to the main road or slip through the housing estate and footpath at the end, to reach N52º 04.289 W001º 16.548. Here locate the number on the tall post (D).

Back to the main road and then turn left heading for the back door of one of Middleton Cheney’s 3 major churches that you will pass on this walk. On the door there is a phone number for the New Life Church. (01295 711E77) at
N52º 04.376 W001º 16. 490 approximately.

Our last port of call before a stroll to the cache is to admire the architecture of this building built in 19FF. You will find this date at N52º 04.403 W001º 16.446.

Now using the information you have gathered work out the final resting place of the cache. The entrance to the footpath is very close to your left, clearly signed forming a part of the Jurassic Way. There are other alternatives if you have a map with you but thats the way I went when setting it.
