This is my first ever cache to place, so I didn’t want to
get too fancy.
Oil was discovered in the area known as Goose
Creek in 1908, and by 1918 the field was producing almost 9
million barrels of oil annually. Shortly thereafter, ground
was broken on the giant Humble Oil Refinery in Baytown. Now
ExxonMobil, the refinery is the largest in the United States,
in terms of capacity.
At one time, the area was dotted by dozens of oil derricks. By
1990, after producing over 140 million barrels of oil in it’s
lifetime, the Goose Creek field was in decline. The oil glut of the
mid 90’s led to the shutting in and mothballing of many of the
wells. With today’s $50+ per barrel oil prices, however, the field
is seeing a rebirth. Many of the pump jacks are operating again,
and you may even see a drilling rig or two working in the area.
