This is a two-part, multi-cache in a little-used section of the
Allegheny National Forest. The terrain is basically flat, but is
muddy year-round in spots. The area near the final cache can be
very wet after a rain. Parking area is on Dunns Eddy Road. There
are spaces for about six cars
We made this second hide after all the great response to the first
Irvine Flats cache. The Newbold Estate, also known as Irvine Flats,
is near property we own in the area. It is a favorite walk for the
locals, but sees little traffic otherwise. We wanted to share this
gem with other geocachers. We are at our property frequently and
will be able to check any problems with the cache. This cache uses
only the old railroad grade that passes through the forest. This
National Forest Service area is listed by the Audubon Society as a
birding hot spot. It also features great spring to fall viewing of
many native wildflowers. The cache is about 1 mile from the parking
area. The entire loop is about 2 miles. The cache should be
available for four seasons. If you are traveling south on Dunns
Eddy Road, the first parking area you reach is the parking area for
Anders Run. It is NOT the parking area for this cache. The closest
parking area is just south of a stone house on the east side of the
road. Be careful of bears in non-daylight hours. The first find is
a 35mm film holder. The final part of the cache is a Tupperware
container. No digging is allowed or required for this cache. While
on Dunns Eddy stop and visit Anders Run (1/2 N of Irvine Flats). It
is a pleasant hike with only a few visitors.
