The river Säveån is dropping 40 m in height between Floda and Lerum (53 to 13 m above sea level)and the area around this wild river is within a Nature preservative. This also makes it very frequented both by nearby living as well as by friends of birdlife and fishing. Also is canoeing popular when allowed.
Among the rare birds you may find Cinclus Cinclus (strömstare), Motacilla Cinerea (Forsärla) and Alcedo Atthis (Kungsfiskare). Fishing is only permitted with a valid license and salmon is wellknown to be fished here.
There are ruins of many industrial activities along the river and the small place Stenkullen was built up around this period. Several mills and other waterpower consuming industries have been situated here. Today an electric powerstation resides downstream in Hedefors, and it is sometimes open to visitors too. Ruins of the Brittania factory, originally from 1883 but restored in 1992 are still clearly visible. The new Brittannia factory is situated close to the railway station in Stenkullen, which also is the most straightforward way to get here. I
f you come by car there is a parking facility close to the railway station or near Knavra bro at N57 47.140 E012 18.510. From the later you have a very nice stroll along Säveån to Floda. In 2022 this area also became completed with a Lab cache for those who like to take a longer stroll.
This area may be partly flooded, depending on season so bring good boots ! During summertime there are several places along the river that are used for barbecuing and also where you can take a swim. Take care when swimming since the mainstream is violent, so that you don´t get out into it !
5.8.2008. Decided to move the cache to a safer position since flooding and less careful replacement could make the cache float away. This is not likely to happen any longer.
12.4.2022 Moved cache away from the sauna.
Please replace the cache in a safe way so that it is not visible. Also note that there are often people fishing further downstream at a place well worth visiting. Just follow the path further on.
The cache is now a metal micro and it contains only a log book.
